Agentic AI in Manufacturing: The IT/OT Governance Line That Decides Success or Downtime
The earlier manufacturing piece made the case. This one draws the line that actually matters in delivery: where IT ends and OT begins, because that's where agentic AI either compounds value or causes downtime.

The productivity case is uncontested — maintenance orchestration, supplier coordination, quality-exception handling, field dispatch are textbook agentic territory, and ServiceNow is building supply-chain depth directly into the platform via Source-to-Pay supplier insights and visibility. The risk asymmetry is the point: an agent that mis-acts on an ITSM ticket is recoverable; one that mis-acts on a production-critical OT system is a P&L and potentially a safety event.
Meta title: Agentic AI Manufacturing: The IT/OT Line 2026 Meta desc: Manufacturing's agentic ROI is real; the risk is OT. Where the IT/OT governance line sits and how to deploy without a downtime incident. The governance enabler is concrete. AI Control Tower now detects anything non-human — AI agents to connected devices — governing physical and smart devices the same way, spanning operational and information technology. That unified visibility is the precondition, but it does not erase the line; it lets you enforce it. The dependence on accurate CMDB and asset intelligence is acute in manufacturing because the asset graph spans equipment most IT inventories never see.
A deployment line that holds: IT/service workflows first (contained, fast ROI, no plant exposure) → supply-chain and supplier coordination next (external commitments, tighter permission tier) → OT-adjacent only with strict least-privilege, real-time containment, and engineering sign-off, never on an IT timeline.
